Projects I’ve worked on

Selected client work and projects from Gavin Bell and previously 2nd Magpie.

Kainos

Led the migration from Lotus Notes to Dynamics for DVSA Enforcement and created a model for non-police prosecution to English & Welsh as well as Scottish courts.

Foundry4/TPXimpact

Worked for BEIS on Green Homes Grant scheme and some other projects for BEIS Digital. Ran several long discovery projects on Teacher Identity for DfE and on Cattle Movement for Livestock Information.

NHS Digital

Working for NHS Digital I led a major discovery into Bookings, Referrals and Appointment Management, this created a new model for referred care across the UK healthcare system, the subsequent alpha was put on hold due to coronavirus.

Department for International Trade

Working for DIT I was product lead for EU Exit and ensure all the varying tools which were required for the new UK trading environment were delivered and able to interact successfully with each other.

EY-Seren

At EY-Seren I led their government and public sector business as client director, winning work in a wide range of departments and agencies from HS2 to HMRC, Big Lottery Fund and DIT.

Ministry of Justice

I was Head of Product and helped set up MOJ digital services in 2013, launching one of the early first 25 digital exemplars, Prison visit booking. I then took on a service owner role covering criminal justice and developed the Make a Plea service as part of the common platform project and single justice procedure reforms.

HSBC

Working for Friday with their client HSBC the task was to research and design the experience for an engaging, editorially led product aimed at commercial banking customers and international trade.

the Guardian

Gavin Bell was commissioned by the Guardian to write a white paper on online identity which was presented to the GMG board.

The Only Way is Essex, ITV

Assessing the digital experience for The Only Way is Essex and helping ITV to see how to portray the programme with the shift in broadcast pattern from a single five week run to the 2012 season of multiple four week runs. The main characters in TOWIE are neither cast in the traditional sense, nor presenters of a programme, so a story led approach was the right approach. Bringing the website back to a focus on the characters and the longer term plot elements gave it a stronger framing than a collection of media elements.

Vulpine

Ongoing technical and product development consulting with Vulpine, who make lovely cycling clothing for commuting. They are a 2011 startup, items developed are commercially focused including abandoned basket reporting, google analytics, and a refer a friend affiliate scheme, as well as advising on use of the social web.

Road.cc

Product strategy and development work with road.cc to develop new tools to improve engagement with the cyclists who use their site. The early part of this work was exploring the social object for a cyclist, which is the riding, then designing products around this idea.

BikevDesign, Design Museum

Gavin Bell was interviewed for BikeVDesign, a Design Museum event and publication. BikeVDesign is now a regular publication and biannual event, 2nd Magpie are providing technical consultancy and introducing contacts in the bicycle world.

Nature Network

Gavin Bell led the product design and management for Nature Network from initial concept through four major releases. Expanding the remit from a city-specific science website to an international forum for scientific discussion with community driven local interest groups. Nature Network is the primary community platform for the Nature Publishing Group.

Orcid

Orcid is an author identifier for the scientific community. With Timo Hannay, Gavin Bell defined the initial product strategy for Nature, emphasising the importance of a transparent, open standard and operating principles.
